This week on the Real for Life podcast Lance Wigton is joined by long time Real Life member Beth Keop, who is a Clinical Supervisor for a Community Mental Health Provider in North Idaho.
Beth has led Emotional Intelligence workshops for our Real Life Staff and for members in our Real Life Classes venue, and today she is talking through some of the information from her training.
Leadership is influencing people to follow you. As disciples of Jesus, we are called to lead people. In order for people to follow us, we need to have an emotional understanding of ourselves and of others.
As disciples and ambassadors for Jesus, the ability to engage with others and become aware of their emotional state is an important component of our knowledge and ability to reach them. It will help us not only to determine what questions to ask others to help us identify their needs, it can also bring about an awareness of own emotional reflexes and filters so that we can ensure they don't get in the way.
Some of things Lance and Beth discuss include:
- What is Emotional Intelligence?
- Why is your EI more important in leadership than your IQ?
- How do emotions motivate behavior?
- Why Self Awareness is the cornerstone of EI.
- Why trust and vulnerability are key.
- How do guilt and shame contribute to Self-Awareness?
We hope you find this session enlightening and helpful, and we encourage you to subscribe to this podcast so that you don't miss new episodes!

In this episode of the Real For Life podcast, Lance Wigton speaks with Real Life's International Discipleship Team members Dave Campbell and Paul Byrns. They discuss the ins and outs of engaging in conversation and relationship with people from a culture that is different from your own.
This is an important ability when we are trying to share Christ with others through relationship. Some of the things they address are:
- How do we break down barriers and allow trust and transparency to take place?
- How do we become familiar with cultural differences that may exist?
- How do we move past awkward moments when they come up?
- Where do we encounter different cultures without leaving the country?
- How do we look at those around us every day with the same grace we have towards other cultures?
- What cultural differences might we run into in our small groups?
Be sure to watch all the way to the end as Lance tries to stump these world travelers with a game of Name That Place!
